In Zhongshan, we not only have the most beautiful kindergarten building in Shanghai, but also have a professional preschool education team to build an academic professional team.

Of course, the most important thing is to pay attention to children's all-round developmentand strive to create an unlimited learning environment for childhood.

This year, our teachers have to stay at home to interact with children because of the pandemic, but instead of being limited by space, we use more one-to-one ways to discuss the fun of reading with children in-depth; use the opportunity of internet connection to give children more free time, more imagination and thinking to create at home.

We train children not only to be able to read independently, but also to develop their reading skills in all aspects.

The following is our foreign manager Phil's sharing about children's learning and creation at home recently. Let's have a look at Phil, who has nearly 20 years teaching experience, and his students' creation!

Reading

Comprehension

Most of the time, when we think of reading and how our children are doing, we measure by their pronunciation and if they can read the words correctly.

However, at the kindergarten level, we are looking to develop children’s reading skills in more ways than you think.

  1. Figuring out meaning of new words via text or picture clues.

  2. They are learning new words from everything they read, and not just those words that the teacher is teaching them.

  3. They can learn to use tools like the glossary in the book to learn new words

  4. Learning from what they are reading and connecting new fact with something they already know.

  5. Making prediction from reading the title and looking at the front cover.

  6. Making prediction of what might happen on the next page.

  7. Children are using the sounds they already know to figure out the words they see.

  8. Children can sometimes catch their own mistakes when reading and self-correct.

  9. Children can pay attention to periods and commas as they read.

————————

I also would like to have the children read with their schema, meaning that they can connect their experience and imagine what the characters might be thinking or feeling, so that they are learning some good social emotional lessons whenever the opportunity presents itself.

We will be talking about our reading focuses in the coming articles, and I want to show just a few examples of what we are doing with our reading lessons here in Zhongshan.

1

City Garden

In the book the City Garden, we looked at this page and discussed how the students felt about this garden in the city. Would this garden be a place they like to visit or play in?

During our theme lesson on farm animals, we worked on a multiple meaning word called “litter” (it can mean baby animals born at the same time to the same mother, as well as throwing trashing on the floor). So, as we finished up the book, we discussed which garden would they rather play in. The students mentioned how we can make a place enjoyable by not littering.

A Hat for Cat

When we read “A Hat for Cat”, the students, not only did we work on learning new words, out blending skills and our knowledge of the letter sounds, the students also had to decide how the cat felt (without looking at the words), and give reasons for their answers. The children were able to describe the cat’s facial expressions and body language to determine whether the cat likes the hat or not.

When the session was over, the children were able to determine the setting of the story and the characters.

We even had a fun project to create a rhyming book of our own.

“A Jeep for Sheep”   - by Andy

“A Jeep for Sheep” – This sheep did not want a small Jeep, a tall Jeep nor a big Jeep. The sheep wants a cool Jeep :) I would want to get a cool Jeep, too :)

"A Bat for Bat" - by Zak

The coronavirus has a great side effect. This student does not like to draw when we were having regular classes. It was great to see that he is enjoying the entire writing process as well as the illustrating :) This is what children at this age is supposed to be like, and not just wanting to write “words”.
